San Diego Center for Children |
Nicknamed “Big Daddy”, he shoots hoops and plays base guitar like a pro. But 6’6” David Falkquay has a higher calling that puts him eyeball to eyeball and heart to heart with some of the county’s most troubled kids.
David is a child development counselor at San Diego Center for Children, the community’s oldest accredited non-profit organization serving children and families. Children, 6-13 years old, with serious emotional and behavioral problems and learning disabilities come to the Center for treatment and education.
“I’m not here to save the world or the kids, because that’s a great way to burn out,” he says. “These kids need good adult role models whom they can trust to keep them safe while they begin to make sense of their lives.”
David is proud of the honesty he brings to San Diego Center for Children and the kids he cares for. Wearing a broad smile and booming laugh like a badge of honor, he brings to the Center for Children a unique ability to relate to troubled children.
“I was the oldest of seven kids raised by a single mom in a poor neighborhood in Austin, Texas. I did well in school and make some mistakes. I was lucky because I had a mom, aunts, uncles, coaches and teachers who really cared about me.”
David has 11 years experience working with troubled youth. Like the other child development counselors at San Diego Center for Children, David “Big Daddy” Falkquay hopes he’s making a difference for kids.
If you’re interested in joining a team of dedicated mental health and special education professionals, contact Human Resources at (858) 277-9550, ext. 216.
